A social stratification.
If High School Musical has taught me something, it’s definitely the presence of groups based on a certain trait someone posses, commonly known as “cliques“. As far as I know, this practice of categorizing a teenager based on their most dominant feature is now endangered or may not have existed at all!
However, I can’t help, but wonder how my school (and the world!) would look like if we have these cliques? What groups would be established? Would there be an unending feuds between cliques? Or would we get along just fine? But, what interest me the most is what groups would be present in this modern era? Here are some of my guesses:
Almost every American high school movies has at least one jock in them. Oddly though, I can’t seem to find one in any school in Jakarta. The closest cliques to jocks we have is the naughty kids. But, I decided to put it on the list, anyway. If they appeared so much in movies, there’s gotta be many of them, right?
Jocks can be identified by their, ever so popular, varsity jacket. I mean, don’t they have any other jackets in their closet? Or are they trying to be one of those cartoon characters who never change clothes?!
Well, I guess it doesn’t matter. Whatever they decided to wear, girls would line up for them, anyway.
The common misconception about nerds is that they are depicted as antisocial beings. But, I find it to be untrue. The nerds in my school are pretty fun to hang out with. Some of them actually play sports!
What’s surprising is the fact that there is only a small fraction of nerds who love to read. Actually, most of them just like to play games and talk about girls.
And although I can be categorized into nerds, I don’t usually hang out with them. I don’t find talking about ‘CS : GO’ and the latest Razer laptop to be comfortable.
The movie depicts mean girls as glamorous, bitchy, and fake as hell. And although some of it is true. In my school these so-called “mean girls” aren’t mean at all. They’re just a little too confident for their own good.
Most of the time they’re an honest and nice person that’s a little too fancy. So I think it’s time we change the phrase “mean girls” into “popular girls”.
Unlike most cliques, wallflowers tend to be unnoticed. While the jocks crowd the gym, the wallflowers tend to hide in a corner and read a book. They are mostly antisocial and would rather sit in silence than talk. But, don’t underestimate them. While it’s true that some of them are pretty average, a few of them actually has an extraordinary talent at something.
They just don’t like to brag about it, unlike some people. And some of them are actually very talkative, but they’re a little too shy to initiate a conversation. So, try to have a friendly conversation with that guy sitting on the corner, someday, he might just be the most successful guy in your school!
If you ask them which cliques they belong to, they would answer, “None.” They’re not athletic enough to be called jocks. Not shy enough to be called wallflowers. Not even nerdy enough to be called nerds.
They don’t feel comfortable with the cliques available and would rather spend time alone or with other outsiders. Their personalities differs from one another, but because they’re thrust into the same situation, they somehow get along.
This is the clique I definitely belong into. I’m smart, but am not the type to study 24/7. I like exploring, but sometimes all I want is to be curled up in my bed and watch a good drama. 🙂
And I feel that many people will belong into this category. It’s the most flexible clique, after all. You’re not pressed to have a certain trait. The only personality you’re supposed to have is a nice one. If you’re not an asshole, you’re welcome anytime.
Overachievers make you think twice about the saying, “Nobody is perfect.” Well, who won’t, when there’s a living proof to argue it? They have straight A’s, a pretty face, and as nice as a saint. With this much pros, some people might start hating them. But, you can’t hate a person who didn’t do anything wrong, can you?
Although they are rare, I know a person who I thought to be an overachiever. But, I was wrong. She has a secret I can’t iterate here. A dark secret. So don’t just assume a random nice, smart, and pretty person to be in this category, dig deeper before you judge somebody. And if they turned out to be an overachiever after all, you’ve just found a diamond in the rough. 🙂
After writing this post, I actually really am curious about which clique I belong to. Well, after taking an online quiz, I can proudly say that I belong to the nerd clique. I’m not sure what cliques are available in that quiz’s answer though, so I didn’t really take it to heart.
Whatever a quiz say, I’ve lived my life so far as an outsider, being a different kid with no particular interest. And guess what, it’s awesome. 😉
